Many middle managers feel overwhelmed by long-distance leadership.

Extensive research has been carried out into how employees are doing in the new digital world of work. How it perceives the top floor, too. But what about the already troubled mid-level bosses?
EThere are countless studies on how mobile and flexible work is received by the workforce, on who likes to work from home, who likes to come to the office – and in general about what employees want from their company. After all, they were often the victims of a rapidly digitizing working world during the pandemic.
But others also suffered, at least according to the Federal Association of Personnel Managers (BPM). We’re talking about the middle managerial level. Already in a difficult position as a “sandwich manager” in their role between top management and employees, the new hybrid working world hit these managers with full force. In order to shed light on the phenomenon of “hybrid work” from the perspective of middle management, BPM and the management consultancy Kienbaum launched a survey among 240 affected executives. Due to the survey population, which included a disproportionate number of BPM companies, the numbers are not representative, but still give an insight into how sandwich managers feel about the new way of working two years after the start of the pandemic.
