Renault has unveiled the successor to the Kadjar. It’s called Astral and will be in Dutch showrooms in September. Special are its ‘living’ lighting, four-wheel steering and sliding rear seats.
Unlike the Kadjar, the new SUV is not a derivative of the Nissan Qashqai: it clearly has its own identity. The Astral also gets the scoop at Renault of a new, sporty-looking and extra luxurious-looking top version that will be called Esprit Alpine.
Two 12-inch screens and a 9.3-inch head-up display dominate the interior. Renault promises no fewer than 32 driver aids to support safety and comfort. The car will be available as a petrol hybrid (E-Tech) or as a 48V ‘Mild Hybrid’ petrol version. It is produced in Palencia, Spain.
The Astral gets a large ground clearance
With its high ground clearance (17 cm), the Astral does not shy away from a route outside the asphalt. And at 4.51 meters in length, it is 8 centimeters longer than a Nissan Qashqai. Extra attention has been paid to the (LED) mood lighting. It consists of strips in the dashboard and doors and adapts to the outside light on the basis of the human 24-hour cycle. For example, it changes color automatically every half hour: during the day cool tones predominate to emphasize the technology and at night there is a warm light glow, intended as a ‘reassuring glow for extra comfort’.
According to Renault, this gives you the feeling that the lighting comes to life. The latter also applies to the lighting on the outside of the car, which can display animations, for example as a welcome greeting. Depending on the upholstery and options chosen, the interior of the Astral is finished in real wood, leather, Alcantara, quilted textile or other soft materials.
The space in the second row of seats is, according to Renault, among the best in this segment: 27.4 cm knee room and more than 90 cm headroom. In addition, the rear seat can be moved over a length of 16 cm for extra seating or luggage space. Depending on the engine version, the luggage compartment is 430 liters to a hefty 575 liters. Four-wheel steering is an option, giving this SUV an extremely tight turning circle of just 10.1 metres.
