2021 had gone badly for the new car market in Italy, and 2022 continues at this pace. Even in January, registrations suffered the minus sign, with a loss of 19.7% in sales compared to last year. With 107,814 units registered according to UNRAE data, the first month of the year shows a drop in sales of more than 26,000 fewer vehicles compared to January 2021, which had one working day less, but was supported by government incentives.
Looking at the data, it turns out that there is a dizzying decline in purchases by individuals; without incentives there was a loss of 20% compared to 2021. Long-term rental marks a sharp drop of 16.7%. Looking at the segmentation by engine type, there was a further meltdown of petrol and diesel which archived a share of 27.2% and 19% respectively in the month. Retrieve the LPG (9.2% share). Hybrids rise (now at 34.9%).
Although with volumes growing by 45% pure electric and plug-in hybrids have collapsed in terms of representativeness compared to December, stopping at 3.4% and 5% respectively, overall about 5 points less than last month. Small cars and high-end cars are growing, confirming that Italians are currently not tempted to buy medium segment (and price) cars. The advance of SUVs continues, to the detriment of sedans.
Average CO2 emissions from new registrations fell in January to 118.2 g / km, down 8.1% compared to 128.6 g / km in the same month 2021: this is one of the few positive figures of the month. The second-hand market in January, on the other hand, recorded dizzying growth: + 34.3%, despite a very weak January 2021, with 348,137 changes of ownership gross of mini-revolutions.
UNRAE president Michele Crisci declared: “We hope that now, finally, the Government will take over the dossiers, such as the automotive one, which have been completely neglected in recent months. The plans envisaged by the PNRR for electric vehicle infrastructure networks must be rapidly implemented, with a precise time schedule on how to invest the allocated resources; furthermore, it is urgent to carry out the projects of the Ministry of Economic Development to support the purchase of low-emission vehicles, so as not to block the electrification process in our country. And, finally, to align the Italian taxation of company vehicles with that of the main European major markets to make Italian companies competitive. Without interventions, the ecological transition will be significantly slowed down if not interrupted and Italy will risk remaining behind in green policies compared to Germany, France, Spain and the United Kingdom, condemning the development of the ECV market in our country to backwardness. The month of January is already a confirmation of this with a share of BEV and PHEV that collapses to 8.4%, losing almost 5 points compared to last December“.
