The Navy (SEMAR) activated security measures in various states on the coast of the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean in the face of the imminent threat of potential tropical cyclone sixwhich could generate adverse weather conditions. A significant increase in waves and strong winds are expected, which has forced the closure of ports to both small and large navigation.
Lieutenant Aníbal González Juárez, in charge of meteorological analysis within the SEMAR, said that the cyclone will bring with it dangerous waves in the coming hours. It is estimated that the surf in the northwest, southwest and central region of the Gulf of Mexico reach heights of between 10 and 14 feet, that is, from 3 to 4.3 meters. These conditions will mainly affect the coasts of Tamaulipas and Veracruzwhere waves of 8 to 12 feet are expected, equivalent to 2.4 to 3.6 meters. In Yucatán and Quintana Roo, waves could range between 5 and 8 feet, which represents a height of 1.5 to 2.4 meters.
SEMAR warned that, in the next 48 hours, when the cyclonic system approaches the coasts of Tamaulipaswaves could reach up to 15 feet (3 to 4.6 meters), affecting navigation in much of the Gulf of Mexico. In Campeche and northern Yucatan, waves will remain in the range of 7 to 10 feet (2.1 to 3 meters). These weather conditions could continue for at least 72 hours, even when the tropical system moves north.
Blanca Lucido Toto, SEMAR meteorologist, stressed that the agency, “committed to human life and maritime safety,” issued storm and tropical system warnings for the coastal states of Tamaulipas, Veracruz, Tabasco, Campeche and Yucatan. These measures include the closure of ports to minimize risks to both commercial and recreational vessels.
In the state of Tamaulipas, the ports of Tampico, Altamira, La Pesca and Puerto Matamoros are closed, while in Veracruzhave suspended activities in lthe ports of Veracruz, Tuxpan, Coatzacoalcos, Alvarado, among others. Likewise, Tabasco has closed the ports of Dos Bocas and Frontera, and Campeche has interrupted navigation in Isla del Carmen and Cayo Arcas.
Given this situation, SEMAR insists on the importance of taking extreme precautions and staying informed through official channels. Adverse weather conditions, characterized by strong winds and high waves, will continue to affect navigation and coastal activities in the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean.
The cyclone is expected to continue causing complications in the next 72 hours.which is why the states of Tamaulipas, Veracruz and Campeche, among others, must continue to be under strict surveillance, given the potential impact on maritime and port security.
