If he still needs it, Fabio Quartararo can leave Barcelona with some more certainty. After yesterday’s wonderful victory, which allowed him to take off in the World Championship, the Yamaha rider was also the fastest in today’s collective tests, setting in the morning a time of 1’39 “447 in the best of his 67. turns.
Returns which were also used to definitively discard the aerodynamics that Yamaha had introduced at Mugello: if on the one hand it is true that it earned a little bit in terms of top speed, on the other it is equally so that the M1 lost something in the corners. According to “El Diablo”, therefore, it was not worth it to go and break his balance for such a small gain on the straight.
Just 4 thousandths further back we find a Pecco Bagnaia who this day also served to let off the rage for the zero caused yesterday by Takaaki Nakagami at the start. The Ducati rider, who completed over 80 laps, said he was satisfied with the news from Borgo Panigale, explaining that the new fairing brings some top speed back to the Desmosedici GP without taking away its handling, but that this is probably an element that will arrive. only next year, because it still needs to be refined.
The Piedmontese was not the only one to test it at Ducati, because it was also made available to Jack Miller (6th), Enea Bastianini (9th) and Luca Marini (13th). The driver of Gresini Racing, who at the moment still has the 2021 aerodynamic package, on the other hand, did not hide the fact that the new version is tempting and that he would not mind having it available after the summer break. Among the novelties, however, there was also a new frame, which was certainly used by Johann Zarco, third at the end of the day. It should also be remembered that the Frenchman was the only driver on the track for Pramac, as Jorge Martin flew to Modena today to be operated on his right hand.
In fourth position is Aleix Espargaro’s Aprilia, with the Granollers rider who also crashed at turn 2. The Noale manufacturer surprised everyone with a very special new aerodynamics, also because this time he didn’t work on the fairing like most of the competition, but on the lower part of the fairing, which makes a step and then swells, it seems to clean the flows also inside as well as outside. The Mugello tail was also revised, but this time without the characteristic fin that Lorenzo Savadori had used in Tuscany. Small steps forward also for Maverick Vinales, seventh.
Continuing to scroll through the rankings, we find Pol Espargaro’s Honda. Thanks to the absences of Marc Marquez, who is returning from Minnesota right now after the fourth operation on his right humerus, and Nakagami, who remained under observation after yesterday’s bang, the Japanese manufacturer has resigned to the idea of having the news also to the departing pilot. Between him and Alex Marquez, who instead finished 16th, there were three different chassis available, including the one that Marc had used at Mugello. But these were not the only news according to what leaked from the HRC box
In the top 10 there is also space for Franco Morbidelli and Fabio Di Giannantonio, respectively in eighth and tenth position. The Yamaha rider, who crashed at turn 5, worked further on setting up his M1, also testing a carbon swingarm. 56 laps also for Andrea Dovizioso, only 19th at over a second, although he was satisfied with having probably improved his position on the saddle and having tried a slightly different fork. A few laps instead for Marco Bezzecchi: the driver of the Mooney VR46 stopped in the middle of the day to avoid straining his right arm, which was slightly sore after yesterday’s crash.
Only 11th the best of the KTMs, which was that of Brad Binder, with the South African who tried a new pivot and was also the victim of a crash at turn 5. A lot of work also for Miguel Oliveira, 14th, who even had three different RC16s inside its box. Joan Mir was no less at Suzuki: thanks to Alex Rins’ wrist injury, the Majorcan was the only driver of the Hamamatsu house today and tried two different aerodynamic packages, finishing with the 12th fastest time.
