The 2022 Italian Grand Prix, eighth round of the MotoGP championship, was won by Pecco Bagnaia. The Piedmontese rider from Ducati thus stamped his second victory of the season after his success in Spain. With this result, the 2018 Moto2 champion also gets closer to the top of the world championship standings, recovering 5 points on the leader Fabio Quartararo, today a good second with his Yamaha. Third place for Aprilia’s Aleix Espargarò, which retains the second position in the general classification, falling to eight points behind Quartararo. These are the statements of the first three finishers released to Simon Crafar’s microphones at the end of the race.
Pecco Bagnaia (1st, Ducati): “Win here? I already lost my voice screaming with my team. It’s incredible. Excellent work from everyone, thanks to the team and thanks to everyone. We worked hard. Last week we were still strong but we had bad luck. This weekend we worked very well. The start was not the best, but I am still delighted to have won the home race, in front of our fans. It is a beautiful feeling“.
Fabio Quartararo (2nd, Yamaha): “The best race of my entire career. I felt good all weekend. I had a great start, then I was overtaken, then I lost the front and the rear, I had the Ducatis in front… but in the end I made it. It was a fantastic race. Before the race I told myself I had nothing to lose. I knew I didn’t have a shocking pace. We have made some small adjustments and now I can say that we have made the right choices. We shot at our best, I’m very happy. It’s Mother’s Day in France, so I want to dedicate this achievement to her“.
Aleix Espargarò (3rd, Aprilia): “I’m happy. Mugello is Mugello, it is always special. This is the home race for my team. I tried everything, I was very focused and still disappointed after yesterday’s qualifying. I gave it my all but it was dangerous, I couldn’t get the bike any further. Today, on the other hand, I managed to overtake the Ducatis and I spent about 15 doing it. Above all to fight against the VR46. I couldn’t win but I don’t think my pace was much slower than Pecco’s. But you have to be even more aggressive in overtaking and I didn’t make it. Fabio was better than me in overcoming the others and came first. I’m very happy with the podium, but today I wanted even more ”.
