Pecco slips with five laps to go. Fans in celebration for the Doctor’s farewell
Five laps from the end of the Misano Grand Prix, Fabio Quartararo won the MotoGP world title. Pecco Bagnaia was in command of the race, he was extending a long arm wrestling over Marquez who had hunted him from the first laps in which he was winning. The gap had just reached second, when at the penultimate corner he lost the front and saw his dreams fade away in a cloud of dust. At that point, Fabio was mathematically champion, regardless of the result. The podium escaped him a handful of corners from the podium (overtaken by Bastianini), but it didn’t matter. While Marquez and Pol Espargarò (a Honda double) and Enea celebrated the first three places in the GP, Quartararo was crying with joy at the edge of the track.
After stopping the bike, he walked on a red carpet before seeing his entire career on the screens, accompanied by the music of a DJ. The flames lit up the stands and he wore a golden helmet. Fabio is the first world champion in the premier class for France, a historic milestone.
“I still don’t believe it, I can’t even speak. It’s a wonderful feeling, simply a dream »said Fabio, prey to emotions.
Quartararo was not the only party. Valentino Rossi also wanted to greet all his fans in Italy for the last time. The Doctor stopped in front of his grandstand and threw the helmet with which he had just won 10th place in his home Grand Prix. A little joy, the result of a comeback started from last place. Before him arrived his brother Marini (who wore a yellow livery with the words “Thank you Vale”), with Viñales 8th behind Aleix Espargarò, Rins and Zarco. Morbidelli only 14th, who had to deal with a leg not yet healed, while Pirro finished the race 12th.
