“It is a million human tragedy, a million people who have been driven from their homes by the war” since February 24, the Guard said in a statement on Twitter.
He added: “One million people have heard the border guards say to them as soon as they cross the border (you are safe).”
The United Nations had announced earlier on Sunday that the total number of people who left Ukraine in search of refuge in neighboring countries exceeded 1.5 million.
Their arrival in Poland sparked a broad wave of solidarity.
The authorities facilitated procedures at the borders and prepared reception centers, while thousands of volunteers provided meals, transportation and accommodation in their homes across the country.
