The United States imposed broad sanctions on Friday, February 23, on the second anniversary of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, targeting more than 500 individuals and entities, in an attempt by Washington to increase pressure on Moscow. “Putin will pay an even higher price for his aggression abroad and his repression at home,” US President Jose Biden said.

This is the largest arsenal of sanctions since the start of the war in Ukraine: more than 500 people and organizations from several countries linked to the Russian war machine are affected. Two years after the invasion of Ukraine, and after the death of the opponent Alexei Navalny, Washington thus marks the occasion.
The measures are aimed at the Mir payment system, Russian financial institutions and its military industrial base, future energy production and other sensitive areas for Russia.
They also cover officials involved in the death of Russian opposition leader Navalny, as reported by the Treasury and State departments in separate statements.
The action seeks to hold Russia responsible for the war and the death of Navalny, explained US President Joe Biden, in a statement, at a time when Washington seeks to continue supporting Ukraine even as it faces an acute shortage of ammunition and US military aid has been delayed for months in Congress.
Vladimir “Putin will pay an even higher price for his aggression abroad and his repression at home,” Biden said of the sanctions.
The U.S. Treasury Department sanctioned nearly 300 individuals and entities, while the State Department charged more than 250 and the Commerce Department added more than 90 companies to the Entity List.
