The image of the state government is suffering under Economics Minister Hubert Aiwanger. There's a reason for that. A comment.
Munich – Maybe Hubert Aiwanger fearfully stopped a start-up success. But it could also be that the head of the Free Voters courageously prevented the Free State of Bavaria from sinking 50 million in tax money into distant air taxi dreams with his veto against the Volocopter guarantee.
Nobody can really judge Aiwanger's controversial decision fairly, not without a crystal ball. The problem for the economics minister in Prime Minister Markus Söder's government is different: his veto fits nicely into the exaggerated image of a thwarted agricultural politician who cares passionately about bark beetles and hunting, but listlessly shuffles through the world of business and high-tech.
Hubert Aiwanger skips meetings of the Max Planck Society
Unfortunately, there is something to it. It is fitting that Hubert Aiwanger was now kicked out of the research-intensive Max Planck Society because he skipped every meeting for five years. It has not been proven whether Bavaria suffered any material damage as a result. But what is undoubtedly suffering is the image of the state government Munich. In times of crisis, Bavaria would need an economics minister who is passionate about change and innovation, who thinks a decade or two ahead, has national reputation and has an international network.
Hubert Aiwanger stands for none of this. Because, despite all the criticism (particularly fueled by the CSU), he has his strengths in other policy areas, can convince people, is hard-working and has hundreds of thousands of voters behind him, it becomes even clearer: He has been in the wrong ministry since 2018 and has been in the wrong ministry since 2023 wrong cut.
