Summer has Germany firmly in its grip. A heat wave is expected to reach the Federal Republic by the weekend. Other countries are already suffering from the hot temperatures.
Offenbach – The temperatures are climbing, the weather is getting better and better, it promises to be a great summer – at least from a German point of view. While in many places more and more people flock to the outdoor pools, lakes or ice cream parlors every day, it is getting downright uncomfortable in some other European countries. In Spain, a major heat wave is currently determining the temperatures and the northern neighbor France is also feeling the first signs of this development. The next logical “victim” of the unusually hot temperatures has already been determined.
Heat wave over Germany: Meteorologist predicts temperatures over 40 degrees
The so-called “hot air bubble” actually comes from North Africa and, after Spain and France, is on the direct route to Germany. On the Iberian peninsula, temperatures are currently rising to gigantic heights, inland experts are expecting peak values of up to 44, maybe even 45 degrees! At night, the thermometer rarely falls below the 25-degree mark, and mid-summer seems to have Spain firmly in its grip as early as mid-June.
“France also gets an extraordinary heat load for mid-June – on Friday at up to 42 degrees – later it will also be very hot in Italy and the Balkans,” commented meteorologist Paul Heger on the current events wetter.de. The prospects for the weekend (17th to 19th June) in Germany are still a bit uncertain, Heger continues, but extremely hot temperatures must be expected: “On Friday it will be mostly sunny again with up to 34 degrees. The weekend brings us extreme heat for this time of year with up to 37, maybe even 38 degrees on Sunday.”
Unlike in south-west Europe, where people suffered from the heat wave for up to ten days, the meteorologist sees a rapid relief phase for Germany: “It will be significantly cooler from the north-west on Sunday with huge contrasts to the hot air remnants in the south-east, before partly severe storms and thunderstorms could compensate.” How exactly this thunderstorm and cooling phase will affect cannot be predicted at this time.
Heat wave in Spain and France: Warmest May since weather records began
In Spain and France, the “fight” against the unusually hot weather is in full swing. The weather is “not normal” for the time of year and is due to global warming, the Spanish weather service said. French Prime Minister Elisabeth Borne said she was determined to “guarantee the protection of the most vulnerable”. “The heat wave clearly shows the impact that climate change is already having on our everyday lives,” said Grégoire. She referred to the reports of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, which warn of an increase in extreme weather phenomena. It could be the earliest heatwave of the year since weather records began in France.
Several French water suppliers have called for water saving. Restrictions already apply in a good third of France’s 101 departments. Depending on the warning level, the watering of gardens and fields is rationed; Cars can no longer be washed and private pools can no longer be filled. In Spain and France, May was the hottest since weather records began. (to with afp)
