Canada and Germany have formed a mining alliance through the Mercedes brand, which once again confirms itself politically active, albeit indirectly. The automaker has signed a memorandum of understanding to promote opportunities in Canada’s electric vehicle supply chain, including protecting sustainable sources for raw materials. Mercedes-Benz and Canada will try thus new mining and refining opportunitiesin particular by hunting for cathode materials and activating the production of battery cells.
In particular, the Canadian-German company Rock Tech Lithium and Mercedes-Benz intend to sign an agreement for an annual supply up to 10,000 tons of lithium hydroxide. Which will come exclusively from mining sites controlled according to IRMA mining standards.
“Mercedes-Benz is looking to open up new ways to responsibly acquire raw materials so as to rapidly increase the production of electric vehicles. Guaranteeing direct access to new primary and sustainable sources of raw materials is a fundamental step on this path. With Canada, Mercedes-Benz has a strong and capable partner to pave new paths for a new era of sustainable transformation in the automotive industry“Said Markus Schaefer, member of the board of directors of Mercedes-Benz Group AG, Chief Technology Officer, Head of Research & Development and Procurement.
“I am delighted that Mercedes-Benz and Canada signed a Memorandum of Understanding on Battery Value Creation today. This is excellent evidence that cooperation with our close friends and allies in Canada is further intensifying in the context of commodity security as well, and may encourage other companies to follow suit.“, he has declared Olaf ScholzChancellor of the Federal Republic of Germany (photographed together with Justin Trudeau).
“Canada is fast becoming the green supplier of choice for major automakers, including major European manufacturers, as we move towards a cleaner and greener future. By partnering with Mercedes-Benz, Canada strengthens its leadership role as a world-class automotive innovation ecosystem for clean transportation solutions. Canada is committed to building a strong and reliable battery and automotive supply chain here in North America to help the world meet global climate goals“, Said the Honorable François-Philippe Champagne, Minister of Innovation, Science and Industry.
The supply of high quality lithium will not prohibit Mercedes from working the ore in Germany (Guben, Brandenburg), and therefore the problem of transport from one country to another will arise. There will be work on supply chains so that logistics are also sustainable.
