Memoir Seija Silventoinen 1934–2022

Economists, overcamer Seija Adele Silventoinen (os Mooncage) died at the age of 87 in Helsinki on 4 February 2022. He was born in Tampere on 10 July 1934.

Silventoinen earned a distinguished 40-year career in the service of the Federation of Finnish Student Unions (SYL). Silventoinen, a graduate of the Helsinki School of Economics with a degree in economics, was hired as SYL’s office secretary in 1960. He first worked as administrative secretary and then as office manager. In addition to his native languages, he was fluent in English, German, French and Spanish.

Silventoinen was responsible for the smooth running of SYL’s office, the organization of the union’s federal meetings, seminars and events. He acted as a stabilizing anchor even in the stormy phases of student policy and made sure the student’s cause was taken forward.

In addition to SYL, he also handled many matters for the Student Service, the Student Travel Agency Travela, the Student Health Care Foundation’s FSHS and student housing regulations.

Forty During his one-year career, Silventoise accumulated a significant relationship network of SYL alumni, which he himself played a key role in creating and maintaining. She was also one of the founders of SYL’s women’s network, the SYL sisters.

The calendar of the great consumer and world traveler of cultural pleasures was always full of rushes. Silventoinen greatly enjoyed traveling, classical music and opera, as well as art exhibitions, events and celebrations.

He was a well-known organizer of parties and dinners for his hospitality: friends and SYL alumni have remembered numerous fun evenings and dinners in a charming home in Taka-Töölö.

Silventoinen retired in 2000 and worked as an active SYL alumni for another 20 years, getting to know the actors of different years and decades. He began his retirement day by publishing a memoir that deeply opens SYL’s operations I saw it this way and wrote in the preface that he wanted to be so helpful and beneficial to future actors as well.

In 1998, the President of the Republic, Martti Ahtisaari, awarded Seija Silventoois the title of Chief Chamber Officer for her work for the student movement. Until recently, Silventoinen was involved in the background working group of SYL’s 100-year-old historical work published in 2021.

Silventoinen’s close circle included children and their families.
