What a blow for the League on differentiated regional autonomy
Giorgia Meloni definitively sinks without ifs and buts the regional autonomy of the League and of the minister Roberto Calderoli. The words of the Prime Minister are clear and unequivocal.
“The message that this initiative sends is that we want to unite Italy, mend the fabric between the larger and smaller cities, that we want to guarantee all citizens the exact same right to access services quickly and easily , we do not resign ourselves to the idea of Serie A and Serie B citizens or services. We want a single Italy with equal services and rights for all”, said the premier speaking to the ‘Nuvola’ at the presentation event of ‘Polis’ by Poste Italiane.
“The country – Meloni underlined – needs a sense of responsibility from its ruling class”, “there is no room for personalism or disputes on the skin of the citizens”. “We – she continued – can still be a model, this nation can still be an example for others to follow, a model that others copy. We have taught a lot but we can still teach a lot. This is a project that teaches”.
And “choosing where we want to take this nation is a job that we must and can do together. This nation can and must still have the role it deserves on the international scene, all rowing in the same direction, this is the great goal we set ourselves”. The prime minister then addressed the mayors in particular: “To the mayors I want to reiterate the government’s commitment to do everything possible to make their task easierfrom digitization to abuse of office, no mayor should be afraid to give answers to citizens”.
Sources at the highest levels of the League read Meloni’s words as a rejection of regional autonomy and Calderoli’s text. No approval by the end of the year, as Matteo Salvini wanted and, indeed, a text that will be revised in Parliament, if not distorted, pace of Luca Zaia and Northern League supporters who regret Padania and secession.
