The wait is over, finally the new Mazda CX-60 came out into the open. The new SUV of the Japanese car manufacturer is at the top of the range and plays a fundamental role in Mazda’s growth ambitions, representing a further step in terms of design philosophy but above all of electrification. In terms of size, the new CX-60 is slightly larger than the CX-50 unveiled for North America last year, being based on Mazda’s new rear-wheel and all-wheel drive Skyactiv multi-solution scalable architecture.
From a point of view of design, the new SUV of the Japanese brand is based on the “Kodo-Soul of Motion” philosophy, and stands out for the presence of a sculpted front, an aggressive looking rear, L-shaped headlights, 18 “or 20” wheels ″ And eight colors available for the exterior livery (Jet Black, Deep Crystal Blue, Sonic Silver, Platinum Quartz, Arctic White, Rhodium White Premium Metallic, Machine Gray and Soul Red Crystal). Inside the cockpit, the scene steals the technological and connectivity aspect: in particular, we find a TFT-LCD digital instrument panel, a display dedicated to the 12.3 “infotainment system and a large Head-Up Display , which is three times larger than what equips the CX-30. The Driver Personalization Systemwhich uses a camera to detect the driver’s eye position and memorize the exact position accordingly to automatically adjust the seat, steering wheel, head-up display and door mirrors.
Let’s take a look to the motor offer, which for Europe materializes in a triple proposal. The first solution is a plug-in hybrid, which combines a modified version of the previous 2.5-liter SkyActiv-G four-cylinder petrol engine with an electric motor and a 17.8 kWh lithium-ion battery pack, which guarantees a zero-emission driving range of 60 kilometers. The total power released by this powertrain is 323 hp, while the maximum torque reaches 500 Nm, specifications that translate into a sprint from 0 to 100 km / h achievable in 5.8 seconds and a top speed limited to 200 km. / h. Alternatively, you can opt for a 3.0-liter straight-six e-Skyactiv X petrol engine equipped with a 48V mild-hybrid systemor a 3.3-liter e-Skyactive D inline six-cylinder diesel combined with the same mild-hybrid technology.
Whatever the engine solution chosen, Mazda offers a new eight-speed automatic transmission, equipped with multi-plate clutch and integrated electric motor / generator that replaces a traditional torque converter. The i-Activ all-wheel drive system is also offered as standard, while there are five driving modes available to the driver: Normal, Sport, Off-Road, Towing and EV. As for the suspension, the system installed by the Japanese brand has double wishbones at the front and a multi-link configuration at the rear. Final comment on the Kinematic Posture Control system, which makes the SUV more stable in high G-forces by slightly braking the inner rear wheel to mitigate roll. The new Mazda CX-60 plug-in hybrid is already available for order: the first deliveries are scheduled for the autumn.
