Pedro Sánchez recovers the former Murcian deputy, who will deal with Telecommunications and Digital Infrastructures in the Ministry of Calviño
After three years away from the political front line and focused on her personal and professional life, María González Veracruz returns in style. The Council of Ministers yesterday approved the appointment of the former PSOE deputy from Murcia as the new Secretary of State for Telecommunications and Digital Infrastructures, a position that had become vacant after Roberto Sánchez left it for personal reasons.
María González Veracruz, who until yesterday, Tuesday, was a teacher at a public institute in the Region after passing an opposition and obtaining her own teaching position, will be integrated into the organization chart of the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Digital Transformation, under the orders of the first vice president of the Government, Nadia Calvino. However, President Pedro Sánchez has played a key role in her appointment. In this way, there is once again a high Murcian position in the Socialist Executive after the dismissal of Pedro Saura as Secretary of State for Infrastructure in July 2021, due to the departure of José Luis Ábalos from the Ministry of Transport.
The appointment removes the PSRM, as critics of the current leadership find a benchmark again
The appointment has a regional political reading, since it comes to stir the hornet’s nest in the PSOE of the Region of Murcia, just in the week in which José Vélez will be proclaimed as a socialist candidate for the presidency of the Autonomous Community in the regional elections of 2023 González Veracruz opted to lead the PSRM in 2017, but was defeated in the primaries by Diego Conesa by a narrow margin of votes. Since then, and especially in recent years, those dissatisfied with the apparatus that formed Conesa and now Vélez were orphans of a political reference. Now they have it with the new Secretary of State for Telecommunications.
Second stage
María González Veracruz was a close collaborator of Pedro Sánchez during his first stage as general secretary of the PSOE. However, in the 2017 congress, she opted for Patxi López instead of Pedro Sánchez. And this, after his victory in the primaries, he surrounded himself with other leaders such as Adriana Lastra and Santos Cerdán. But since July 2021, the President of the Government has been recovering lieutenants from his initial days, such as Óscar López, Antonio Hernando, the current spokesperson for the central government, Isabel Rodríguez, and Patxi López himself, spokesperson for the Socialist Parliamentary Group in the Congress. This circle is closed with the return to the front line of González Veracruz.
José Vélez is convinced that the new senior position will do “everything in his power” for the Region
The new Secretary of State for Telecommunications and Digital Infrastructures will be in charge of promoting the sector; audiovisual communication services; the deployment of infrastructures and services to guarantee the connectivity of citizens and companies; and boost productivity and economic growth.
The PSRM’s reaction to the appointment of a Murcian socialist as Secretary of State was limited to a tweet from the Secretary General and Government delegate in the Region, José Vélez, in which he congratulated María González Veracruz for her new responsibilities. «I am sure that you will do everything in your power for our Region. It is great news that a Murcian assumes this responsibility, “wrote Vélez.
“It is a pride to be part of the Government that is transforming Spain”
María González Veracruz yesterday expressed to LA VERDAD her “deep pride” in being part “of the Government that is transforming Spain and decisively facing the economic, energy, technological and climatic challenges that this country had pending.” The new Secretary of State for Telecommunications and Digital Infrastructure showed her gratitude to both Vice President Nadia Calviño and President Sánchez for her appointment, which represents “an exciting challenge” in an area with which she is very familiar. In fact, during her time as a deputy for Murcia in Congress, Veracruz was a rapporteur for the Telecommunications Law. Among the objectives that she sets in her new responsibilities are “the deployment of broadband and 5G technology throughout the national territory”, as well as “the implementation of the 2026 Agenda and ending the digital gaps that they still exist.”
