Antonio Maíllo assured before the media this Monday that the management of the crisis triggered by the resignation of Íñigo Errejón due to accusations – and a complaint before the court – of sexist violence will mark the future of the space to the left of the Socialist party (PSOE). The leader of United Left (IU) has attended to the media during a break from Mayors Foruman event that organizes training with the councilors and mayors that are distributed throughout the different towns and cities of the State.
Maíllo has also assured that “the conditions are not met“at this time to elect a new spokesperson in the Sumar Plurinational Group and that the ideal would be to first open the debate on the election method and then carry out the election of the spokesperson.
But the IU leader goes further because he considers that the moment is propitious to advance in a “reorganization“from Sumar’s group in Congress that affects the deputy spokespersons. This is a request that, he points out, is not new, but with which his party continues to insist in the Lower House.
Regarding the Errejón case, which he described as a “shock”, he spoke of the importance of “not losing the perspective that sexist violence is structural of society and that crosses all political organizations.” In Izquierda Unida, without going any further, the case of the already former deputy took place Miguel Angel Bustamante.
After having made the political decision to remove Errejón, Maíllo emphasizes that “cover the victims and that they feel accompanied”. But he has specified that it has to be a “real accompaniment” that extends even to the eventual judicial processes that are triggered from this point. He also stressed that he was never aware of the case, but that “if there was someone who knew about it and did not act, they have a responsibility” and added that the actions “are already being undertaken.”
Claim of municipal power
Regarding the content of the Forum of Mayors, Maíllo has claimed the importance of municipal politics and has indicated that his party wants the debate on the reform of the regional financing ―one of the great melons of the legislature especially after the tax agreement between ERC and PSC in Catalonia― is accompanied by another debate on the local financing.
The IU leader has also pointed out that politics is “too linked to the Madrid Court“and that peripheral policies should take on more importance. He has therefore claimed “municipal power” as “the one that solves people’s problems.”
