PT had ties to the Catholic since the 1970s; the archbishop was one of the great supporters of the ABC labor movement
The former president and pre-candidate for the Presidency of the Republic Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva (EN) and his running mate, Geraldo Alckmin (PSB), attended the wake of Cardinal Cláudio Hummes on Tuesday night (July 5, 2022), at the Sé Cathedral, downtown São Paulo.
The Archbishop Emeritus of São Paulo died on Monday (4.Jul.2022), aged 87, at his home in the south of São Paulo. He was in palliative treatment for irreversible lung cancer.
“Today I was at the Sé cathedral to say goodbye to my friend, great priest and follower of the teachings of Jesus Christ Dom Cláudio Hummes. Rest in the peace of the Lord.” published Lula on social networks. The PT posted a photo next to the cardinal’s coffin, accompanied by Alckmin and Father Júlio Lancelotti.
Lula had ties to the Catholic since the 1970s. Hummes took over the diocese of Santo André in 1975, and was a great supporter of the ABC labor movement, when the former president was a union leader.
This Wednesday (6.Jul.2022) there will be a morning mass presided over by Cardinal Dom Odilo Scherer and then the body of Dom Claudio Hummes will be buried in the crypt of the Cathedral. Thousands of people must pass through the site during the wake days.
