Dhe FDP chairman and Federal Finance Minister Christian Lindner commented on the circumstances of his church wedding at the weekend. Lindner had married the journalist Franca Lehfeldt on Sylt. After the civil marriage, a wedding service was held in the Evangelical Church of St. Severin, although according to media reports neither of them are members of a church.
Sloterdijk gave a speech, the pastor a sermon
Lindner has now confirmed to the church’s own magazine “Chrismon” that he left the Catholic Church at the age of 18. However, that does not mean “to withdraw from every form of spirituality,” said Lindner. He pointed out that when he was sworn in as a minister, he used the religious oath formula.
In the past, however, Linder had also taken positions that were critical of religion and had acknowledged his ideological skepticism. The FDP chairman also confirmed that the ceremony in the church was a “real wedding service with a sermon”. The speech by the philosopher Peter Sloterdijk, who was critical of Christianity, in St. Severin was only about “leading thoughts”. “He enriched the service, the pastor shaped it.”
Lindner said the talks with the local pastor “encouraged my thinking” about joining the Evangelical Church. The wedding also led to a debate within the church about the value of church membership and church tax if non-members are also allowed to use church services. The responsible Northern Church has passed a contradictory regulation. Lindner did not want to say whether he and his wife made a donation to the community. The community was “no economic disadvantage”.
