The remarkable meeting between the two presidential candidates, Haftar and Bashagha, came on Tuesday, at a time when Libya is experiencing a political, economic and security crisis, and the people are also hoping for presidential elections to end the chaos.
After the meeting ended, Bashagha read out the final statement, announcing the agreement of the candidates to launch a national initiative to “gather the word of the Libyans and reunite”, and unify national efforts to deal with the data and events that the country is going through.
In light of the Libyan-Libyan moves to heal the rift and try to prepare the atmosphere for the faltering elections in its first station, suspicious movements began on the part of the armed militias in the capital, Tripoli.
A glimmer of hope
Libyan-Libyan movements were described as a glimmer of hope in light of the uncertainty in the political scene, as Abdel Moneim Al-Yasir, former head of the National Security Committee at the General National Congress, confirmed that these steps deserve praise and support from the Libyan street and the international community.
In his speech to “Sky News Arabia”, he explained that the meeting that brought together the presidential candidates is a real fruit on the path to national reconciliation, as it produces national political leaders who bear the responsibility of moving from the current crisis.
He stressed the need to deal in good faith in order to find an internal Libyan solution without external parties, and also demanded that the candidates agree to implement all the tasks of the 5 + 5 Joint Military Committee; For the exit of mercenaries and militias and the restoration of state sovereignty.
Following the meeting, which was widely praised by the Libyan street, the candidates for the presidential elections announced their agreement that the overarching national interest is above all else.
They affirmed the continuation of coordination, communication, and the expansion of the framework of this national initiative to gather the floor, reunite, and respect the will of the Libyans.
In the same context, the assistant professor of media at the Department of Media at the University of Sirte, Abdullah Atbiqa, described the meeting as a positive step towards unity, restoring the prestige of states, and closing the period of conflict and internal fighting that the Libyan citizen is tired of.
He added, during his statements to “Sky News Arabia”, that the timing of the meeting is an important factor, as it comes in light of difficult circumstances that the Libyan street is going through, and the uncertainty about the presidential elections on which the people are betting.
Atbiqa stressed that the Libyan street is in need of a real national initiative to end the suffering. He continued, “We are tired of wars, deteriorating living conditions, conflict and fighting. We want a secure Libya governed by legitimate national institutions.”
suspicious movements
“With every positive move, we find suspicious moves.” On this rule, the Libyans agree, and Atbaika asserted, that there are those who always seek to continue the chaos.
He highlighted the mobilizations and meetings that took place by armed militias in the capital, Tripoli, following a reunion meeting in Benghazi.
And a local source from inside the Libyan capital had revealed an unannounced meeting that took place on Tuesday evening, which included a number of militia leaders in Tripoli, hours before the presidential elections scheduled for next Friday.
The secret meetings of the militias come in light of a state of panic that gripped the residents of the southern regions of the capital, with the appearance of armed men heavily in the streets, and threats to close government institutions.
In the same context, Abdel Moneim Al-Yasir, head of the National Security Committee in the Libyan General National Congress, warned of the danger of militia movements and corrupt money groups that seek to sow discord, and thwart any positive results of the Benghazi meeting.
Al-Yasir demanded the necessity of creating a united front through this meeting. In order to confront the attempts of sedition and obstruction of the elections, which is the only way out for the country from the cycle of violence and internal fighting.
It is noteworthy that the meeting between Haftar and Bashagha also brought together a number of presidential candidates, who are “Ahmed Maiteeq, Aref Al-Nayed and Al-Sharif Al-Wafi.”
