It’s a Formula 1 that looks more and more to glamor. In addition to the historic stage of Monte Carlo, Miami and Las Vegas have been added, with the latter arriving in the Circus next season. There may be another fashion appointment: Nice it is in fact a candidate to host Formula 1 on the streets of her city.
This hypothesis, which has emerged strongly in recent days, has been confirmed by the president of Liberty Media Greg Maffei. However, for a Nice to come in, there must be a circuit that goes out. And, given the push to internationalize the Formula 1 product, it is logical that a European date would be missed. Among these, the most at risk are Spa, Le Castellet and its own Mountain Charles: currently none of these circuits have a signed contract for next year. What if Nice’s interest was ‘pumped’ to force Monte Carlo to meet the demands of Formula 1? On the other hand, the Principality, thanks to its history, pays the lowest rate of any other event on the calendar. In addition, the Monaco GP has an agreement with TAG Heuer, widely present as a sponsor in the streets of the Principality, something that Rolex – official partner of Formula 1 – hardly digest, to the embarrassment of Liberty Media.
Maffei denies that Nice is used as a ‘weapon’ against Monte Carlo. However, between the lines, he admits that the Monaco GP, if he wants to stay in Formula 1, must lower the demands: “No, we just want to do great races. We always look around, there are many cities interested in organizing a competition, and we look at the alternatives. Monaco is a wonderful place, it has the best deal of all the tracks on the calendar, and perhaps it deserves it. But there are some things that need to be the same as other races and present in every Grand Prix. The Rolex-Tag Heuer Clash We try to protect our sponsors“, Said Maffei to Autosport. On Spa the US takes time while on the entrance of Kyalami on the calendar is very optimistic: “There is still nothing in mind. I think many of our promoters have taken a step towards improving the structures. On Kyalami we will see. Let’s try to say that we run on all continents where there are cars. We’re trying, we’re not there yet. I think things are looking good for a Grand Prix in South Africa“.
