Faced with the poor results in Eurovision, in recent times the situation is very different for the Spanish representatives of Eurovision Junior. On the six occasions that Televisión Española has participated in the children’s version of the European song contest since it was created in 2003, Spaniards have always been among the top four, with a victory in 2004 thanks to Before dead than simple, played by María Isabel. The 19th edition of the festival will be held this Sunday and will be broadcast on La 1 from 4:00 p.m. with the narration of Tony Aguilar and Julia Varela.
“Come, we are going to that place / where a new sun is born and our dreams are illuminated. / Come, our voices will unite, / our hands will forge, crystalline, a new world ”. It begins so To laugh, the song with which Levi Díaz, 13-year-old young singer born in Cornellà de Llobregat (Barcelona), will represent Spain. It is an optimistic and energetic pop song composed by David Roma with a staging that, according to previous rehearsals, will reflect an urban party full of color, with four dancers on stage between 12 and 14 years old. . The Austrian Marie Sophie Kreissl is the artistic director of the proposal that TVE takes to the Seine Musicale in Paris, where the contest is held. Spain will act in 16th place out of the 19 participants, a situation that, in principle, favors the Spanish representative.
The deployment for Junior Eurovision includes nine cameras for the realization of a proposal that has around 60 plans, as specified by the corporation. Levi Díaz will be surrounded by LED screens that simulate a modern city full of neon lights to reflect that new world that the song talks about. On the stage there will also be a colorful train that, throughout the performance, will discover four jerry cans like drums that the dancers play with fluorescent sticks. “So many things happen [sobre el escenario] that connect perfectly and that make you not get bored and enjoy yourself all the time, ”says Kreissl about acting.
Despite his youth, Levi Díaz already has experience in music and musical television competitions. It was presented to the fifth edition of The voice KidsBut no juror turned around in the blind auditions. However, Diaz followed Melendi’s advice to prepare and return the following year. He did so and in the sixth edition of the program, not only did he get a place in Melendi’s team, but he ended up proclaiming himself the winner of the contest. Thanks to that, he currently has a contract with the Universal Music Spain label.
The covid protocol has transformed this appointment, with delegations in a bubble, daily tests, omnipresent masks and the already customary social distance. On this occasion, a face-to-face edition was chosen, compared to last year’s virtual version, when each representative previously recorded their performance on a set in their country.
Online voting opens on Friday at 8:00 p.m. on the web juneurovision.tv, and contrary to the senior edition, here you can vote for the candidate from your own country. On that page you will find the 19 candidates, including the Spanish one, and each voter will have to choose their three favorites. Voting closes just before the final begins and reopens for 15 minutes when the performances conclude. The votes of the public count 50% of the classification, and the other 50% is obtained from the decision of a professional jury.
This year’s will be the seventh participation of Televisión Española in the 19 editions of Junior Eurovision. Between 2007 and 2018, he decided to leave the contest by not sharing the drift he had taken due to the few guarantees it offered in terms of the protection of minors to public exposure and due to the limited control over the origin of the songs, which were supposed to be composed by the children themselves, a requirement that was later dropped. In 2019, Melani García was in third place, since Soleá Fernández repeated in 2020.
