Andersson plans to submit his resignation so that the Left Alliance can decide on a new chairman in the fall of 2024, i.e. next fall.
In the summer, Andersson will complete eight years as the chairman of the Left Alliance. Andersson thanked the party members and voters for their support during his presidency.
“With this announcement, I can quit the position of chairman on my own terms, without burnout, without crises and without losing the party's trust.”
Andersson has previously said that he will not apply for an extension at the next party meeting of the Left Alliance in 2025. Now, however, he will leave the chairmanship before then.
In addition Andersson said that he will run for office in the June European elections.
According to Andersson, the decision to become a candidate for the European elections was the most difficult in his life. According to him, the solution is the best for his family.
“In my own reflection, this aspect had the greatest weight in the final games.”
Andersson already told in February Suomen Kuvalehti considering candidacy. At that time, he said that it would be very important for the left-wing coalition to keep a seat in the European Parliament.
The current MEP of the Left Alliance Silvia Modig has told, that he is not aiming for the next season. Most recently, the Left Alliance got one representative in the parliament.
The Left Alliance has nominated 13 candidates for the European elections before this. Among them are, for example, a Member of Parliament Merja Kyllönen and known as an actress Riku Nieminen. Each party can nominate 20 candidates.
The European Parliament elections will be held in Finland on June 9.
