A citizen is not required to provide a copy of the passport from a legal point of view. To this agency “Prime” pointed out Head of the branch of the Moscow Bar Association “Zashchita” Anatoly Mironov.
The lawyer noted that there are times when stores require a copy of the main document when purchasing or returning goods. Communication salons, notaries and courts “sin” the same. In such cases, it will be enough to show the passport itself.
However, Antonov noted, sometimes it is more profitable for the holder of a passport to provide a copy of it than to require compliance with the letter of the law. For example, when contacting a government agency, a copy will speed up the data processing process and get a service faster.
Earlier, Mironov told how fraudsters can use copies of Russians’ passports in their schemes. According to the lawyer, the most common scheme is the production of a fake passport in the name of a citizen based on a copy of an authentic one. If we are talking about an impressive amount or about loans from several credit institutions at the same time, then, as a rule, fraudsters can make a duplicate of it using a color copy of the passport. The expert warned that with the received duplicate, the attackers can contact the bank, but not with a photocopy of the passport. Criminals can bring it to the office of a mobile operator to get a new SIM card. With its help, using passport data, fraudsters can try to get money by phone and get a loan in someone else’s name.
