This is why the sky looks almost apocalyptic
The inhabitants of the Region of Murcia have been surprised this Monday by a sky of an intense orange color. It is haze, a meteorological phenomenon that occurs in the atmosphere and is characterized by the presence of solid particles that are in suspension, according to eltiempo.es. Despite being very small, they are numerous enough to give the air an opaque appearance. This causes the sky to take on a cloudy ambient appearance.
Its orange color is due to the fact that these particles are made up of dust, sand and even ashes or clay. There can be two types of haze, the one known as ‘natural’ or the one caused by ‘special events’. In the case of the first, the particles that form it usually come from desert sand, also known as ‘suspended dust’. In the case of the second type of haze, it is caused by pollution or forest effects.
In Mediterranean areas, as is the case in the Region, this phenomenon is usually associated with precipitation, known as ‘mud rain’, since the drops of water drag the dust particles towards the ground. In addition, in the case of haze due to pollution, it can lead to acid rain.
This Monday the effect of the haze, produced by the Saharan dust, has been favored by the entry of the Celia storm, which threatens the entire peninsula with abundant rainfall. The Region of Murcia is expected to experience rain throughout the week that could even be torrential, according to Meteored tiempo.com.
How it affects health
In both cases, prolonged inhalation of this type of particles, especially those caused by pollution or smoke from fires, is harmful to health. By directly inhaling the particles, they can cause respiratory problems or irritation of the mucous membranes. It also affects visibility, which can cause, for example, traffic accidents.
