The passage from Formula 1 to IndyCar by Romain Grosjean, which took place earlier this season, accelerated a process that could result in the transfer of some former top-flight drivers to the United States for next season. The most evident proof is to be found in the recent tests that Nico Hulkenberg is carrying out at the wheel of the Arrow SP McLaren, a team that will soon welcome the Belgian Stoffel Vandoorne for another test session. At the same time, there is no lack of wishes for reversed parties, such as those declared by Patricio O’Ward and Colton Herta, who would dream of landing in Formula 1 for the next championship.
All this with regard to the universe of the major international open-wheel categories, but the connection between the pilots of the Old Continent and America could also reserve a surprise with another series, which still maintains the honor of being the most followed in the United States among motorsport: the NASCAR. For the 2022, in fact, the latter could present a driver currently active in Formula 1 on the starting grid, albeit in the role of third guide, as Daniil Kvyat.
The Russian, reserve driver of theAlpine, he would in fact have expressed his desire to land in NASCAR for the next championship, so much so that he will attend the appointment in person Martinsville, scheduled for this weekend. More than a mere rumor, the 27-year-old’s will was made known by the Haas team principal Gunther Steiner, a member of a team run by Gene Haas who owns the Stewart-Haas Racing. This, unlike what happens in F1, in fact boasts several successes in the category.
The Bolzano manager commented on Kvyat’s interest as follows: “Many pilots want to try – he analyzed – and others have moved to IndyCar. Being very different categories for them it would be a big step. It would be like moving from NASCAR to Formula 1. It’s not just a question of driving style, but it would change the whole approach. In Texas Mick Schumacher attended the race, and so will Kvyat in Martinsville, Virginia “
“Everyone who wants to try NASCAR asks me ‘Hey Gunther, could you arrange a meeting with someone?’. In the case of Daniil – he concluded – will evaluate if there are any important offers for him, given that at the moment he is not competing in Formula 1 ″. After making his Circus debut in 2013 at the wheel of Toro Rosso, Kvyat joined Red Bull in 2015, remaining there for a season and a half before returning to Faenza. Having concluded his experience in 2020 with the AlphaTauri, the Russian boasts three career podiums, with the best placement – second place – obtained at the 2015 Hungarian Grand Prix.
