Is compulsory corona vaccination compatible with the Basic Law? Baden-Württemberg’s Prime Minister Kretschmann thinks this is possible – and is promoting a general vaccination requirement. And he’s not alone.
Berlin – Baden-Württemberg’s Prime Minister Winfried Kretschmann considers a general compulsory corona vaccination to be compatible with the Basic Law. He does not think that this would be unconstitutional, said the Green politician on Monday evening in the ZDF “heute journal”.
Vaccination was compulsory in Germany for a long time, but it was given up decades ago. There is also such an obligation in a weakened form in the case of measles.
Kretschmann and Söder promote compulsory vaccination
Kretschmann and Bavaria’s Prime Minister Markus Söder (CSU) promoted compulsory vaccination in a joint guest article for the “Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung”. “Compulsory vaccination is not a violation of civil liberties. Rather, it is the prerequisite for regaining our freedom, ”both politicians wrote. On ZDF, Kretschmann spoke of a difficult weighing process and a deep encroachment on personal rights. Even deeper interventions are measures like those in overburdened hospitals – for example, a selection of who is treated and who is not.
Kretschmann made it clear that if a vaccination is compulsory, no one will end up in jail if they refused, or be picked up by the police for vaccination. However, fines would be possible. One can assume, however, that the population generally adheres to the law, even if someone is not convinced of it. According to Kretschmann, an obligation to vaccinate would be a matter for the federal legislature.
Warning of large crowds
Saxony’s Prime Minister Michael Kretschmer warned of large gatherings on Monday evening. “We should do without anything in which many people come together in one place over a long period of time – both inside and outside,” said the CDU politician in the ARD “Tagesthemen”. In Saxony, which was particularly hard hit by the fourth corona wave, a new corona emergency ordinance has been in force since Monday. Christmas markets and large events have been canceled, in retail the 2G rule applies with the exception of everyday goods.
“This virus has gained significantly in strength and, all of us in the population, we are annoyed and we have lost our strength,” said Kretschmer on ARD. This combination leads to the fact that if there are outbreaks, these “proceed very rapidly”. dpa
