Fraud using online trading platforms (like Avito, Yula and others) unexpectedly took second place among the schemes used by cybercriminals to steal funds from citizens’ cards.
Such data are contained in the ranking of the Popular Front on the basis of complaints from Russians, which they left on the resource of the organization “Moshelovka” for six months of its existence.
The message board scenario, which was first spotted only last spring, already accounts for 11.6% of all complaints. And appeals from government agencies, including from law enforcement agencies, were only in third place in the ranking (10% of appeals).
The palm was left behind as a cover for a “call from a bank employee”. This scheme accounts for more than a third (36.6%) of cases. Attackers impersonate security specialists, credit approval departments, financial monitoring, or technical support.
Experts explain the rapid spread of the scheme using online trading platforms by the simplicity of a technical solution that is available to anyone who has taken the path of fraud. There are several more factors that contribute to the development of this type: the development of distance selling, the desire of people to save money on the purchase of goods, and also to make money on the sale of something unnecessary. The main danger, according to experts, is that minors are actively involved in this scheme.
Less common are appeals on behalf of a broker (4.7%), a credit institution (2.6%) or from supposedly friends and relatives (2%). It is extremely rare for malefactors to present themselves as collectors (0.7%), insurance companies (0.3%), or charitable organizations (0.2%).
