WILMINGTON, United States (Reuters) – US Vice President Kamala Harris congratulated Xiomara Castro on her historic victory as Honduras’ first woman president and discussed ways to strengthen US ties with the Central American country, the White House reported.
Harris and Castro discussed their shared interest in tackling the root causes of migration, including increasing economic opportunity, fighting corruption, addressing security threats and improving access to health and education, he added.
“They pledged to work together and deepen the partnership between the United States and Honduras,” the White House said, without giving details.
A top government official told Reuters on Friday that the US was ready to “increase” economic aid to the new Honduran government.
Castro, a former first lady whose political career was launched after leading a national movement against a 2009 coup d’état that ousted her husband Manuel Zelaya from the presidency, emphasized commitments to women’s rights in her election campaign.
