Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, Boris Johnson, opened this Monday (1) the 26th United Nations Conference on Climate Change (COP26), with an appeal for the summit to be the “beginning of the end” of the fight against global climate crisis.
“If we fail, our children will not forgive us. They will judge us bitterly and they will be right,” the British prime minister told 120 heads of government and state who will meet today and tomorrow in Glasgow, Scotland.
In the speech that opened COP26, Johnson used the figure of secret agent James Bond, when making an analogy of adventures to save the world in fiction, with the real threat suffered by the planet.
“We’re pretty much in the same position as James Bond, except the tragedy is that this isn’t a film. The countdown to the end of the world day is real, and the clock is ticking,” said the British prime minister.
“With two degrees more, we will put food distribution at risk. At three degrees more, there will be more wildfires and five times more drought. With four degrees more, we will say goodbye to cities like Miami and Alexandria,” he added.
Johnson’s speech was the first among global leaders, who will present strategies to meet the goal of limiting global warming by 1.5 degrees.
Next, negotiators appointed by governments, community blocs, organizations and companies will seek to close, over the next two weeks, a final agreement for COP26.
“I was in Paris six years ago, when we agreed to zero emissions and to limit warming to 1.5 degrees. However, these promises will have been no more than ‘blah blah blah’ if we don’t make this COP the time to be realistic against climate change,” Johnson said.
“COP26 cannot and will not be the end of the fight against climate change, however, although it is not the end, it must mark the beginning of the end,” he added, calling for work with creativity and imagination from global leaders.
