“You have to get Hamilton through. Obviously do it in a strategically convenient point “. So did Red Bull he instructed by radio Verstappen after what happened in Turn-1 and Turn-2 at the start of lap 38. Hamilton attacked the Dutchman, who tried to defend himself with a desperate braking that forced him to cut Curva-2. For this reason the Race Direction advised Red Bull that it was necessary to give up the position in order not to incur a penalty.
Max Verstappen tried to let Hamilton pass before the last corner, to then have the DRS to his advantage and counterattack on the straight. The reigning champion, however, did not take the bait to stop the World Cup leader. The Mercedes driver found himself with a damaged wing, Verstappen with the rear end which lost effectiveness.

The result was a real ‘refereeing’ hodgepodge with Verstappen who was then punished with five seconds penalty for taking advantage of the cut in Curve-2. The Dutch driver then gave way in any case to Hamilton, who this time ‘parked’ him on the outside of the last corner forcing Verstappen to end up in the dirt, a maneuver that did not allow the 1997 class to counterattack. For this episode Red Bull is very upset as Helmut Marko pointed out.
