Caan entered film history for his explosive performance as Sonny in “The Godfather” (1972), a film directed by Francis Ford Coppola. The character, with a volatile and conflictive character, gave the interpreter an Oscar nomination for best supporting actor in 1973.
According to The Guardian, Caan originally auditioned for the role of Michael Corleone, which would ultimately fall to Al Pacino. The interpreter achieved great comments with his performance, especially for the scene of Sonny’s death.
James Caan also had notable roles in such films as “Misery”, “Elf”, “Thief”, “The Godfather Part 2”, “Brian’s Song” and “The Gambler”.
Affected by the death of his sister, as well as his heavy drug use, Caan’s career came to a halt in the early 1980s, after he dropped out of the thriller “The Holcroft Covenant,” where he was replaced by Michael Caine.
He would not appear in another Hollywood film until 1987, when Coppola cast him in his drama “Gardens of Stone.” His career picked up again with the Rob Reiner-directed adaptation of Stephen King’s “Misery,” in which he played the bedridden author subject to the attentions of obsessive fanatic nurse Kathy Bates.
