Israel | More than 20 people were again wounded in clashes in Jerusalem

Unrest and violence have increased in Jerusalem recently.

In Jerusalem more than 20 people have been wounded in the clashes again.

The Palestinian Red Crescent has spoken in police clashes between police and protesters in the vicinity of some twenty wounded Palestinian al-Aqsa mosques. Five of them were taken to hospital. Some had been wounded by rubber-coated bullets.

According to Israeli police, hundreds of protesters gathered early in the morning and gathered stones before Jewish visitors began to arrive in the Temple Mount area. The mountain of the temple is the holiest place for the Jews, and for Muslims it is the third holiest. Jews are allowed to visit the place at certain times but do not pray there.

Police said they went to the Temple Mount area “to restore order”.

Unrest has been elsewhere in the city, according to local media and police. In East Jerusalem, a local hospital has reported that Palestinian youths were throwing stones at buses passing by, resulting in seven people receiving treatment for minor injuries. Police have said they have arrested 18 Palestinians.

The situation in the city has recently intensified. About 150 people were injured in clashes on Temple Mount on Friday. At the time, police went inside the al-Aqsa mosque, which was condemned in Muslim countries.

The UN has appealed to the parties to calm the situation. In his traditional Easter Sunday address, Pope Francis also hoped for peace in Jerusalem and free movement to the city’s holy places.
