The Government will present next week a bill for the dissolution of Parliament “after exhausting all attempts to stabilize the coalition”
Israeli citizens will return to the polls for the fifth time in three years. The government coalition announced on Monday the dissolution of the Knesset (Parliament) and the call for early elections. “After exhausting all attempts to stabilize the coalition, we have decided to bring the bill [para disolver el Parlamento] to a vote in the Knesset next week,” Prime Minister Naftali Bennett and Foreign Minister Yair Lapid said in a statement. Two leaders of the ruling coalition since June last year, when they came together in a unique formation in the country’s history made up of parties from the right, center and left to end the twelve years in power of Benjamin Netanyahu.
The Executive will present next week a bill for the dissolution of Parliament, which would mean the end of the 36th Government of the State of Israel. According to local media, the elections are expected to be held at the end of October.
The decision has caused stupor in the government team. “It is a shame that the country has to go to elections again,” declared the Defense Minister and leader of the Blue and White party, Benny Gantz, who has expressed his surprise at the intention to dissolve the Knesset, which he has described as “Shame”, according to the newspaper ‘The Times of Israel’. However, Gantz has assured that he does not “judge” the measure and has stressed that the Executive will continue to work in functions “as far as possible.”
