Subaru Tecnica International (STI), the sports arm of the Japanese manufacturer, is also studying what motorsport will look like in a carbon neutral form. This E-RA Concept should already give a foretaste of that. It is a compact race car with Subaru styling, without really being based on a current model.
200 kW per wheel
Under the ‘hood’ there is not one, not two, not three, but no less than 4 electric motors. They are also not under the hood, but are connected directly to the four wheels, allowing power to be directed via torque vectoring to the wheel with the most grip for maximum traction and control over the steering angle. The total power of these electric motors is no less than 800 kW, or 1,088 hp, and they are powered by a 60 kWh battery. Full throttle, the battery lasts 4.5 minutes. Just to say that the E-RA Concept is not for endurance racing.
Nurburgring record as target?
No, the “first goal” of the STI E-RA Concept is to set a fast lap time on the Nürburgring, where luckily it is also possible to brake and thus regenerate. Subaru initially wants to dive under 6 minutes 40 seconds, which certainly seems possible given the numbers. The Volkswagen ID.R, which has only 680 hp but seems to have more elaborate aerodynamics, achieved a time of 6’05″335 in 2019. Could that record be beaten soon?
