On Saturday (16), an Iranian warship repelled a pirate attack against two oil tankers in the Gulf of Aden, informed the commander-in-chief of the Persian navy, Admiral Sharam Irani.
“Navy commandos managed to repel this morning [sábado] the attack by pirates against an Iranian commercial convoy in the Gulf of Aden,” said the military officer, quoted by the official Irna agency.
“The destroyer Alborz was escorting two Iranian tankers when the convoy was attacked by five pirate ships. After the fleet fired, the aggressors were forced to leave the area,” added the admiral.
According to Iranian state-run media Press TV, Alborz began operating in international waters in August to protect naval lanes and maintain the safety of Iranian cargo ships.
In recent years, Iran’s navy has been expanding its reach, sending ships to the Indian Ocean and the Gulf of Aden to protect its ships from attacks by Somali pirates.
