Iran will participate next Thursday in a meeting in Brussels to resume negotiations on the 2015 nuclear agreement, which had been suspended since June, a deputy from the country said on Sunday.
“Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian declared that negotiations with the 4+1 group will start on Thursday in Brussels,” MP Ahmad Alirezabeigui told Fars agency, after a meeting of the Parliament with the head of diplomacy. By mentioning 4 + 1, the deputy was referring to four permanent members of the UN Security Council (France, UK, Russia, China) and Germany.
Last Friday, the head of diplomacy of the European Union (EU), Josep Borrell, expressed his willingness to receive Iranian leaders in Brussels at his request, after a visit to Tehran by the EU negotiator in charge of the nuclear issue, Enrique Lives. Deputy Behrouz Mohebbi Najmabadi posted on his Twitter account that “the Iranian government will start negotiations this week.”
“I know that the Iranians want, in a way, prior discussions with me, as I am the coordinator, and with other members of the Council. I’m willing, but time is short,” said Josep Borrell in Washington on Friday. A spokesman for the official did not confirm “if or when” the meeting in Brussels would take place.
