Iran | The UN Human Rights Commissioner and the United States condemned the executions carried out by Iran

A total of 17 people have been sentenced to death in connection with the protests, and at least four people have been executed.

Iran use executions as a weapon to punish people who participate in protests, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk said on Tuesday.

According to Türk, using criminal justice procedures to punish people just because they have exercised their basic rights by protesting is tantamount to state-sanctioned killing.

The US administration also condemned Iran’s latest executions and, like other countries, demands an immediate end to the death penalty.

The National Security Adviser of the White House told about it Jake Sullivan. In his tweet, he refers by name to the two men executed by Iran on Saturday and also mentions the new death sentences announced on Monday.

Iran’s judiciary said on Monday that the country had sentenced to death three people accused of killing three members of the security forces. Saleh Mirhashemi, Majid Kazemi and Saeed Yaghoubi was sentenced to death on charges of “war against God,” the judiciary’s news website reported.

In addition, two people are said to have received prison sentences for the same case. Judgments can still be appealed to the country’s highest court.

A total of 17 people have been sentenced to death in connection with the protests that lasted more than three months. Iran has executed at least four people for crimes related to the protests. The six convicts have been offered the chance for a new trial.

September hundreds of people have died and thousands have been arrested in the protests that started in the middle of the year.

According to the Norwegian-based Iran Human Rights organization (IHR), at least 109 of the arrested protesters have either been sentenced to death or are facing charges that could result in the death penalty.

The IHR said on Monday that a total of around 480 protesters have died since the protests began.
