Iran attacks Israel with hundreds of drones, launched in 3 waves. Tehran launches the offensive, in Operation 'True Promise', using a well-known weapon: the Shahed drones, also protagonists in the conflict between Russia and Ukraine because they were widely used by Moscow to strike Ukrainian cities.
Shahed drones have been in the spotlight since late 2022 and particularly early 2023 for their role in Russian strategies. Shahed-136 drones are small, cost-effective unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) designed to evade air defenses and strike ground targets after detecting them.
“The Shahed-136 drones are loitering munitions. Loetering munitions at a tactical level have more or less the same characteristics”, Tiziano Ciocchetti, an online military defense analyst, explained to Adnkronos in the past.
The drone – approximately 3.5 meters long, with a wingspan of 2.5 meters and a speed of 180/190 km per hour – has a characteristic delta shape with the fuselage, where the explosive warhead is located, directly integrated into the wings, at whose edges the stabilizers are located.
