India has reacted with sadness to the death of 92-year-old Lata Mangeshkar, nicknamed the Nightingale of Bollywood. According to . the singer has BBC News thousands of songs recorded in 36 languages. Her work can be heard in the soundtracks of hundreds of Bollywood films.
Mangeshkar ended up in hospital last month after testing positive for the coronavirus. She is given a state funeral in Mumbai and a period of national mourning is declared. Flags will be flown at half mast across the country.
Indian President Ram Nath Kovind called the news of Mangeshkar’s death “heartbreaking” for himself and “millions of other people around the world.” Prime Minister Narendra Modi said the death of the beloved singer “leaves a gap that cannot be filled.”
Bollywood stars also reacted with sadness. “No one could sing like her,” actress Hema Malini told media. “It is very sad that she passed away.”
