Zayan told AFP that the Moroccan public prosecutor had charged him with “a series of charges based on the complaint of the Ministry of the Interior,” including “insulting the judiciary and organized bodies”, “broadcasting false facts and allegations”, “marital infidelity” and “sexual harassment”.
Zayan, 78, a former head of the Bar in Rabat, had condemned in November last year that he had been subjected to a defamation campaign, after a local news website broadcast a video clip filmed in a hotel room, and presented as showing him naked with one of his clients.
Last January, the Ministry of Interior announced his prosecution for “crimes of insulting public officials” and “insulting an organized body,” based on his “attacking state institutions by promoting false accusations and allegations.”
Zayan previously held the Ministry of Human Rights between 1995 and 1996. The first session of the trial of the former minister, who is currently on release, will begin on December 9.
