According to Irga (Instituto Rio Grandense do Arroz), the 2023/2024 harvest is 7 million tons, which would eliminate the need for imports
The rice harvest is expected to be similar in volume to that recorded in the last cycle. The projection is 7.149 million tons. The number was 7.239 million in the previous harvest. If the estimate is confirmed, the decline will be just 1.25%. The data is from Irga (Rio Grandense do Arroz Institute). Fpresented at an extraordinary meeting of the Rice Sector Chamber, held remotely this Tuesday (May 21, 2024) by the Secretariat of Agriculture, Livestock, Sustainable Production and Irrigation. The entity argues against the import of rice.
“When the floods occurred in Rio Grande do Sul, the rice crop was already 84% harvested, leaving 142 thousand hectares to be harvested. Of these, 22 thousand hectares were lost and 18 thousand were partially submerged. Among the grains stored in the silos, 43 thousand tons were compromised”, stated the president of Irga, Rodrigo Machado.
Irga’s total production estimate is based on the production already harvested until the floods occurred (6.4 million tons).
“Producers in the region had already lost their entire harvest during planting and had to replant. There, it will be necessary to do something more, a line of credit, insurance to serve these farmers, because they lost not only their harvest, but their homes, machines and animals”, said the president of Federarroz (Federation of Rice Growers Associations of Rio Grande do Sul), Alexandre Velho.
Members of the chain consider the federal government’s measure to remove the TEC (Common External Tariff) for the acquisition of imported rice, in force until the end of this year, to be worrying: “TEC will end up discouraging producers and we will have a further reduction in the cultivated area in the State. To sell rice at R$4.00, the producer will receive less than the production cost, he will not pay for himself”, highlighted Alexandre.
