Mexico.- Archaeologists from the National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH) promised that they will request to adjust the route of the Mayan Train at any point of the current route that affects underwater sites or with finds of pre-Hispanic value.
Manuel Pérez Rivas, academic responsible for the archaeological rescue of the Mayan Train, said that, until now, in the 50 kilometers that the INAH has prospected in the Section 5 south of the Mayan Train, have been found archaeological evidence in five points.
Due to its importance, it will be requested protect with path modifications or some other alternative, he anticipated.
“In some cases an indication of adequacy of the layout to avoid affecting where the main archaeological remains are. And about the protections that can be made, the consortium (Grupo México) will have to inform them to know if they are compatible with the conservation of the monument,” Pérez Rivas said.
“We are preparing the opinion, in fact we have already integrated the information. Soon the INAH will issue this official opinion, to the consortium (Grupo México) and to Fonatur,” he added.
To avoid looting, Pérez Rivas omitted the locations, however, he commented that until now they have found vessels, ceramic and lithic material and evidence of pre-Hispanic settlements along the explored line.
They have also come across albarradas -stone walls- that could be associated with other archaeological sites already known.

“We will issue an opinion on what has to be preserved, on what has to be protected. We document the information. And on that the INAH issues an opinion with the pertinent measures, not in general, but for each monument in particular. If it is a monument in a cave or a cenote, there must be measures to prevent it from being affected,” Pérez Rivas added.
