Over the past 24 hours, 33,548 new cases of coronavirus infection have been registered in Russia. This was announced on Sunday, November 28, at the COVID-19 Operational Headquarters.
The largest number of new cases of coronavirus in the past 24 hours was recorded in Moscow (3,086) and St. Petersburg (2,072).
The number of deaths due to infection over the past day was 1 224, 30 646 people recovered.
In total, 9,570,373 cases of COVID-19 have been detected in Russia since the beginning of the pandemic, 8,268,111 patients have been completely cured.
Earlier that day, the Corriere della Sera newspaper published an image of a spike-protein of the new Omicron coronavirus strain. According to a spokesman for the Bambino Gesù (“Baby Jesus”) hospital, experts “reconstructed” a new mutation of the coronavirus and compared it with the Delta variant. The image shows two proteins of both strains with the most changed areas in red.
On November 27, the head of the technical group of the WHO Emergency Diseases Unit, Maria Van Kerkhove, said that the Omicron coronavirus strain could arise from an infected person with weak immunity after suffering from COVID-19 disease.
On the same day, two cases of a new strain of coronavirus were detected in the UK. It also became known that Omicron was found in a Czech woman who had returned from Egypt. In addition, a new variant of the coronavirus has been identified in Belgium and Italy. Experts in Austria and the Netherlands are testing for the presence of this mutation in their citizens who have returned from Africa.
Russian authorities are urging residents to get vaccinated to protect their health and take care of their loved ones. Citizens are vaccinated for free. Five vaccines against coronavirus have been registered in the country: Sputnik V, which became the first vaccine against COVID-19 in the Russian Federation and the world, as well as Sputnik Light, EpiVacCorona, EpiVacCorona-N and KoviVak.
