Russian President Vladimir Putin brought down gas prices in Europe with one phrase. German newspaper writes about it Die Welt…
The authors of the article recalled that on October 27, during a cabinet meeting, the Russian leader instructed Gazprom to fill underground storage facilities in Germany and Austria with gas. According to the president, additional fuel volumes will stabilize prices on the European energy market. The head of the company, Alexey Miller, assured the President of Russia that the concern would do just that, while the injection would last until November 8. After that, Vladimir Putin ordered to inform him about the progress of this process.
It was these “almost accidental remarks” that allowed the countries of Europe to “breathe a sigh of relief,” the publication says. Against the backdrop of these statements, gas prices in Europe began to fall. In particular, gas futures prices in the Netherlands fell 15 percent.
According to Bloomberg, the Norwegian international energy company Equinor will come to Europe in the face of fuel shortage. A major competitor of Gazprom will increase gas supplies to the European market.
In addition, Ukraine has also made a proposal to use its underground gas storage facilities (UGS) to store strategic fuel reserves. “The gas storage operator uses about 60 percent of the UGS facilities to meet Ukraine’s gas needs. The rest of the volumes can be used for working with foreign partners and solving strategic issues of the energy market of Ukraine and Europe, ”said Serhiy Pereloma, Acting General Director of Ukrtransgaz, the operator of Ukrainian underground gas storage.
In the fall, Europe faced an energy crisis amid high gas prices: within two months, the price repeatedly set the maximum values in history. In early October, prices were approaching $ 2,000 per thousand cubic meters, but then they decreased. The experts named the record low level of occupancy of European storage facilities and supply disruptions as the reasons. As Vladimir Putin noted, the crisis in Europe is connected, among other things, with a reduction in American supplies. “They have removed a significant amount from the European market. By the way, Gazprom replenished them, even supplied more than the Americans and suppliers from the Middle East removed, ”the head of state said. At the same time, according to the president, the situation on the European gas market remains tense.
In turn, commenting on the possible involvement of Moscow in the energy crisis in the EU, senior adviser on global energy security at the State Department Amos Hochstein said that he was not provoked by Russia’s actions. However, the American politician added that the country did nothing to soften it. At the same time, Hochstein admitted that the crisis happened due to various factors, some of which no one could control.
European Energy Commissioner Kadri Simson expressed the opinion that Europe needs to become less dependent on gas imports and more actively use other energy sources. To do this, Simson suggested investing more in the development of green energy.
