In Germany, they began to talk about the approaching cold war in Europe because of Poland and Hungary, which threatens with great problems for the existence of the entire European Union. This is stated on February 16 in an article for the publication Focus German journalist Hans-Jürgen Moritz.
He noted that recently the leaders of Hungary and Poland are increasingly using bellicose rhetoric against the European Union. In the near future, the European Court of Justice will rule on the rule of law dispute between Brussels and Budapest and Warsaw, which could lead to serious losses for the entire European Union.
“This verdict will be a turning point – perhaps the beginning of a cold war between the violators of the rights in Budapest and Warsaw and the rest of their EU partners,” the author believes.
According to Moritz, one cannot rule out the possibility that the EU can continue to exist without Poland and Hungary, countries that once made a significant contribution to raising the Iron Curtain. At the same time, as the observer points out, there are no other ways to leave the European Union except for a voluntary exit. At the same time, he added that even if the court issues a guilty verdict, there will be no immediate sanctions.
Earlier in the day, an EU court dismissed claims by Hungary and Poland against a mechanism that makes allocations from the EU’s general budget conditional on respect for the rule of law by EU recipients. According to the Deputy Minister of Justice of Poland, Sebastian Kaleta, in the event of blocking funds, Poland may refuse to pay contributions to the EU budget.
Earlier, on October 7, 2021, the Polish Constitutional Court ruled that there was an inconsistency in the norm on the superiority of European law over the Polish provision of the Constitution. The country’s Council of Ministers believes that the powers of the EU court, which consist in asserting the supremacy of European law over the country’s Constitution, have been exceeded. In turn, the European Commission promised to protect the priority of EU norms.
At the same time, on December 24, the senator from the Polish Peasants’ Party, Jan Philipp Libicki, called Poland’s exit from the European Union a disaster for the country. He clarified that, first of all, the authorities need to adopt the euro as the national currency as soon as possible.
