The Mexican state of Michoacán is facing an unprecedented wave of violence. Since January, more than 800 homicides have been recorded, making it the most violent state in the country. While criminal groups wage a war for control of the territory, the inhabitants of the state pay a high price: kidnappings, murders and forced displacement. Although some residents decide to take on organized crime, for many others, exile is the only viable option.
