Nestlé Canada employees went on strike on Sunday, 5th, at the Toronto factory, after the failure of contract negotiations between the Canadian branch of the Swiss company and Unifor, a union that represents 461 production and maintenance workers. Nestlé Canada said it does not expect any immediate supply issues with the availability of chocolate bars, such as KitKat, Smarties and other items, on store shelves.
Unifor, Canada’s largest private sector union, said it does not have any bargaining dates planned with the company.
The union said its members decided to strike because of a lack of improvements to their pension plan, a two-year cost-of-living adjustment freeze and concerns about the time it takes employees to reach maximum pay at the factory.
Among the employees who stopped their activities are machine operators, packers, shippers and recipients, general workers and those in skilled trades. The factory produces KitKat, Aero and Coffee Crisp chocolate bars and Smarties.
The food company said its goal is to get employees back to work and that it continues to seek a collective bargaining agreement that will ensure operations at its Toronto factory remain competitive in an increasingly challenging work environment. Source: Dow Jones Newswires
