The Palácio do Planalto highlighted this Saturday, 20th, the meeting between President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) and the Minister of Foreign Affairs of China, Wang Yi, held this Friday, 19th. On the occasion, the PT member reaffirmed the Brazilian position of recognizing the existence of “one China” – a reference to Brazil’s principle against Taiwan’s independence.
According to the government, the Chinese chancellor's trip is preparatory to a state visit by Chinese President Xi Jinping to Brazil. Initially, Xi Jinping will come to the country on a date close to the G20 leaders' meeting, in Rio, in November.
The meeting between Lula and the Chinese representative took place at the Fortaleza Air Base (CE), where the president had agendas during the day. Planalto cited in a note released this afternoon that, during the meeting, Lula and Wang Yi also talked about investments in Brazil by the Chinese electric car manufacturer BYD, which is setting up shop in Bahia.
“The minister brought greetings from President Xi Jinping and the meeting expressed the mutual desire to maintain and develop the strong relationship and friendship between Brazil and China. On that occasion, Lula reaffirmed the Brazilian position of recognizing the existence of 'one China'”, stated Planalto.
The Brazilian president and the Chinese chancellor also spoke about the current international situation and discussed the “growing partnership between Brazil and China in the renewable energy sector”, in addition to discussing joint projects and actions in Africa. “Wang Yi highlighted that Brazil is a priority for Chinese diplomacy”, concluded the government.
As shown yesterday Broadcastin a speech at the Itamaraty Palace, Wang Yi suggested that the governments of Brazil and China should work together to bring the objectives “between the Belt and Road initiative and Brazil’s PAC” closer together.
