SAO PAULO (Reuters) – The 2021/22 soybean crop in Mato Grosso, the main producer of the oilseed, is expected to reach a record 39.19 million tons, the Mato Grosso Institute of Agricultural Economics (Imea) estimated on Monday. , reducing the forecast compared to February data after rains that affected crop productivity.
Last month, the institute linked to rural producers pointed to a production of 39.47 million tons for the grain.
As the harvest approached the final stretch, providing a better definition of yields, productivity was adjusted to 59.84 bags per hectare, down 0.71% compared to the previous report.
“This downward movement was guided by the reduction in the projection of income in the mid-north, central-south and north regions, a reflection of the rains that occurred in greater intensity in these parts of the state”, said Imea.
In addition, the institute cited atypical problems with plant tipping and anomalies in pods –especially in the mid-north region–, which have affected grain weight and quality so far, reflecting a higher level of damaged grains in production already harvested.
However, the estimated average yield for the State remains the highest ever seen in Mato Grosso and is 4.23% higher than that observed in the 2020/21 crop, with emphasis on the west, which reached 61.80 bags per hectare.
With the advance in soybean harvest, Imea observed an increase in areas destined for second crop corn, estimated at 6.3 million hectares, compared to 6.27 million in the previous projection.
“This scenario was influenced by the good progress of corn sowing in the state for most of the season, with about 87.68% of the areas sown within the ideal window, as well as forecasts of above-average rainfall in recent years for the coming years. months, which favors the implementation of corn”, stated Imea.
“In addition, the high price levels and the strong global demand for the cereal continue as favorable factors for the increase in the cultivated area of the cereal.”
Thus, the production of corn second crop was 40.56 million tons, an increase of 24.55% compared to that observed in the 2020/21 crop and above the 40.4 million in the previous projection.
For cotton, the institute’s expectation was maintained at 1.99 million tons of the plume.
“Cotton sowing was completed in February in Mato Grosso and so far the perspectives are optimistic for the harvest, since more than 75% of the areas were sown within the ideal window and good rainfall volumes are expected until the month April, according to NOAA.”
